Wandering the streets of old Shoshone, Idaho, I noticed this scene with a story to tell. At that moment, the quiet location became a great flurry of activity, with families, shoppers, and skateboarders cluttering the view. When the action settled down, a family with three kids arrived to get back into a van parked in front of the barber shop, and that event became a most tedious process. Surely the owner of the bicycle would step out and ride away before all the chaos ended.

Well, the photo gods rewarded my patience and I made the photograph. I like the story that it tells with no actors present. The "incidentals" at lower left—cracked plaster and a scrap of paper—add interest and a sense of time and authenticity to the moment.
