The admonition, "Get closer to your subject," does not apply. A tight shot would show a fox. It would have very little to say about the life of the fox and its environment. The simple expanse of bland sand says a lot. Without that "context," we would have a photograph of a fox. Instead, this is a photograph about a fox. And there is a paradox: The animal is the dominant visual element, yet clearly subordinate to its environment. Very cool. And interesting. Photographs should be interesting.
