Focused

Jessi Carr is the lead singer of Jade. I made several photographs of them at their Arroyo Grande Summer Concert performance, and this is my favorite of the bunch. I am not alone in my enthusiasm for this photograph; everyone who has seen it has remarked on it's immediacy and presence.

This is why the advice "get closer to your subject" is so sound. Jessi fills the frame and takes over our attention completely. I cropped the original photograph, which was already fairly tightly framed, to place her eye at top right - a very dominant graphic position. Her gaze is focused and intense, but it is focused within; she is concentrating on her performance. In this photograph, we can almost connect with her thoughts.
